From the Fundamentals of Alarm Management into Alarm Rationalization

Alarm management has progressed markedly from an intuitive exercise into a powerful technology. Properly conceived and executed, an alarm rationalization will produce an effective alarm configuration capable of providing a critical operator support tool. This paper session will provide an opportunity for participants to interactively develop the fundamental requirements for a proper alarm system design. This design forms the backbone of the generally accepted best practices for industrial alarm systems. The session will close with a demonstration of the power of the process for determining the alarm activation point (also called alarm setpoint) and what it says about how alarms are designed for real use.
