The operator should at all times have a good situation awareness and a sense of control over the situation This is important to reduce stress Train adaptive task- oriented coping mechanisms and skills based behaviour. This is the best in terms of speed, accuracy and error rate (Rasmussen). Provide a set of procedures (at the mouse click of the operator). Better: provide the right procedure for the situation Training can create a kind of routine in the use of the procedures so the operator can rely on 'automated' or skills based responses in time of stress or high-risk situations - however be aware of intuitive (unthinking) response.
