One ARGIS Prototype Based on Handheld Mobile Terminal

In recent years, handheld mobile terminals have developed higher capability of calculation and information processing. In this paper we propose an Augment Reality Geographical Information System (ARGIS) by combining AR technology with simplified Three-Dimensional Geographical Information System (3DGIS). Real-time video streams are augmented with kinds of invisible geo-information, using data from 3DGIS and data captured by built-in sensors. Thus the ARGIS can provide outdoor users with application services such as 3D-Navigation, information retrieval and information communication among users and the server etc. We designed a corresponding prototype system for outdoor navigation in the Peking University campus, to manifest the feasibility and vast potential for future development of the system.
