In this study, two Landsat (TM/ETM) images acquired in April 1987 and 2000, respectively, were used to investigate urban growth in Hefei using multitemporal change detection techniques. The satellite images were calibrated, registered and georeferenced, then classified by the maximum likelihood method. Ancillary data such as land use map, urban planning map were used to assist the satellite image classification and interpretation. Five land use types were obtained, mat is, urban area. Development zone (industrial and mining area), rural residential area, water body, and agriculture land, because the non-agriculture land is the research focus. They showed mat Hefei has lost a great deal of good agriculture land to urban uses in the past 13 years. Many high buildings and shopping center were set up, much more streets and people's square were built. More and more agriculture land converted to non-agriculture one, therefore, urban area and rural residential area expands very rampant as fast population growth and economic development, and is almost twice of it in 1987. The information of urban growth is very useful to local government and urban planners.
