Stainless steels are largely used for handling nitric acid media in spent nuclear fuelreprocessing plant. In most cases stainless steels remain in their passive state. Neverthelessnitric media containing oxidizing ions can lead to intergranular attack. Thisstudy deals with vanadium ions and their influence on the corrosion rate of stainlesssteels. Thus, parametric studies have been carried out on nitric media containing oxidizingions in order to determine the effect of various factors. At the same time, wehave studied intergranular corrosion and estimated long term corrosion rates.
