MSD St. Louis – Bonfils I/I Removal Pilot Study – Bust or Lucky Strike

The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD), like many utilities, faces issues with wetweather sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs). The Bonfils pilot project was the first major project toevaluate I/I removal effectiveness within the MSD collection system. High expectations were inplace at the beginning of the project. The MSD was anxious for the results to see if I/I could becost-effectively removed from their system. The hopeful expectations were soon diminishedonce work began and the pilot area did not contain major directly connected I/I sources.However, valuable data was collected to help with planning decisions for the entire systemespecially in regards to manhole, main sewer and service lateral repair. This manuscript shows apilot project that was initially thought to be fool’s gold and turned out to be a gold mine ofinformation.
