THE CAUSE OF FAILURE OF THE MASSINGIR DAM BOTTOM OUTLET WORKS

Massingir Dam is a 48 m high 4.8 km long embankment dam on the Elefantes River, in Mozambique. It was completed in 1977.On 22 May 2008 there was a sudden massive bursting failure of the outlet structure, which comprises the downstream portion of the bottom outlet works of Massingir Dam. This resulted in an uncontrolled discharge of approximately 1000 m~3/s of water which caused a significant amount of damage.
