Biocontrol of Plant Postharvest Disease on Citrus Fruit by Natural Compound

The present study describes the volatile profile and antifungal activity of essential oil extracted from grown ajowan plants in Iran. Ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi L.) b widely used as traditional folk medicine in Iran for treatment of different diseases. Antifungal activity of the oil was evaluated for control of growth two pathogenic microorganisms (Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum). GC-MS analysis allowed for the identification of between eleven compounds as main volatile constituents of essential oil analyzed. Ajowan essential oil effect on control of green mould growth was more efficient especially in 200 μl spray application. Significant differences were observed between various concentration and time of Orange fruit floating in ajowan essential oil solution;as high effect was obtained in 400 μl for 10 min. Different concentrations of ajowan essential oil have not inhibitory effect on blue mould growth in both methods (spray and floating). Results are shown that ajowan has inhibitory effect on green mould growth but it hasn't effect on blue mould of Orange fruit. Therefore, we could suggest use of ajowan essential oil by spray application before storage for improvement in shelf-life of Washington Navel orange fruit.
