EPA has projected 44 MW of Dry Sorbent Injection (DSI) emission control systems to be used for controlling acid gas emissions from coal-fired utility boilers in order to meet the emission standards of the new Mercury Air Toxics Standard (MATS). Based on recent pilot and field trials with calcium reagents, DSI design inputs evaluated in this paper include fuel HCl concentrations, system particulate control technology and reagent properties. In addition, the ability of DSI systems to remove trace metals from flue gas and the resulting byproducts effects on disposal issues for both calcium and sodium based reagents will be addressed. While DSI technology offers advantages in addition to capital savings, including faster implementation schedules than traditional acid gas control technologies, the limitations of the technology must be addressed when developing a compliance strategy.
