To comply with particulate and mercury emission standards stipulated by the recent EPA MATS regulations, baghouses, including those operated in a TOXECON? configuration, offers a potential strategy for many power plant configurations. The application of the TOXECON? technology on coal-fired boilers using medium to high sulfur coals has not been demonstrated sufficiently to be able to specify how to achieve the MATS standards. Southern Company Services and ADA-ES have designed and constructed a 5 MWe TOXECON? pulse-jet baghouse pilot facility at Georgia Power's Plant Bowen to demonstrate strategies that are compliant with MATS standards for particulate and mercury emissions. Together with the EPRI and co-funding partners, Southern Company will conduct testing to study the relationships between gas temperature, SO_3 levels, carbon feed, alkali injection, baghouse performance and mercury removal. Following parametric tests, the baghouse will be operated for one year to optimize the system performance and gather long-term operational experience.
