A national debate over life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shale natural gas erupted in 2011 after a study was released stating that shale gas had equivalent or even greater GHG emissions than coal. Since then, a number of other published, peer-reviewed studies have included contrary findings, although data limitations and methodological variability make conclusive statements problematic about the "real" GHG emission profile.
