HIGH RESOLUTION SOLAR MEASUREMENTS AT THE DESOTO NEXT GENERATION SOLAR ENERGY CENTER: THE DEPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in collaboration with Florida Power and Light (FPL) and WindLogics has recently deployed 17 spatially and temporally high resolution solar measurement systems at FPL's 25 MW DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center (henceforth referred to as DeSoto) near Arcadia, Florida. This deployment will continuously provide time-synchronized high resolution solar and power measurements at 1 second resolution. The goal of this project is to collect high quality data for a period of a year to better understand the relationship between variability in the solar resource and power production for Megawatt scale PV deployments. Detailed preparation at NREL's Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) ensured a successful deployment in the field capable of providing measurements of necessary quality. This paper details the designing and planning process, the deployment, the issues faced and lessons learned.
