The food system lifecycle provides a wealth of renewable energy opportunities; from energy efficient agricultural practices to food waste to energy technologies. Growing food locally in an "aquaponic" system can significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with traditional agriculture. Additionally, food waste generated from agricultural operations and household consumption can be diverted from landfills or disposal sites and converted to energy for local use. This practice will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the transportation and disposal of food and municipal waste, but can also provide energy independence for rural and developing communities.
