Biogas Use in Chapel Hill, NC

The Orange Water and Sewer Authority (OWASA) has historically used biogas generated by theiranaerobic digesters to heat the digesters and run a methane engine that powered a direct drive 7,000scfm blower. Recently, the methane engine became inoperable and OWASA hired Brown andCaldwell (BC) to conduct an evaluation to determine whether or not there was a viable alternative toreplacing the methane engine that would utilize the biogas that they were flaring. This paperdescribes the evaluations conducted, the alternatives explored and the results of the evaluations.
