摘要

1. Introduction: Machiya Sytem and subsystem Machiya in Kyoto can be considered as an urban system as part of the cityscapes of Kyoto (Fig.1), but as well Machiya itself can be considered as being composed by many subsystems, each of such systems with its own implications of inhabitation, such as dwelling spaces, gardens, ventilation and shade (Fig.2).The understanding of such system depends on the scale and angle it is analyzed. As well it is relevant to consider the development of the whole system and each sub-system in time, therefore the idea of Machiya as certain physical typology of buildings is not that accurate as the Machiya system resembles more a process than an object. In this paper interpretation of modifications of Machiya are used as a tool to interact in a transformation process, generating instances for creativity. In this case, when a Machiya with some modifications is encountered, instead of immediately rejecting such modifications, it is considered that such modification represents a possibility of creative development of Machiya. The subjectivity and arbitrariness of interpretations can eventually be overcome in architectural analysis when referring to such possibilities, which shows to be different from spatial or aesthetic analysis. Basically this means that instead of seeking general rules which according to certain logic should be true for all cases where interpretation might be difficult to use; in this case it is considered the potential of something to be by finding one case in order to show its possibility. Later in order to develop such findings in a more general idea applicable to other cases, depending on how the findings are elaborated they can be more or less effective, achieving eventually better results than exhaustive analysis or statistical analysis which might be more efficient in other areas. It is very important to note that architectural analysis is not the same as spatial or aesthetic analysis therefore might not use similar methods; in this case architecture refers to human inhabitation, and its development in space and time.
