Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology is an inevitable way to improve spectrum efficiency through the use of spatial resources in broadband wireless communication system. This paper presents the hardware design and implementation of a real-time 2x2 MIMO system and it utilizes a modular design approach. This system consists of the baseband digital signal processing (DSP) module, A/D & D/A conversion module, and RF transceiver module. Then we address the comprehensive explanation of the complete design process, including the interface circuits and the corresponding software design. The experimental results show that the correlation coefficient becomes weaker and tends to be stable along with the increase of the receiving antennas spacing. The advanced MIMO wireless communication system proves that the solution based on modular design is flexible. Moreover, the system uses 2.4GHz ISM band and it is real-time and open, and can be easily used by non-RF specialists.
