Applicability Analysis of Ad hoc Routing Protocols Based on Simulation of Mobile Wireless Networks

Different ad hoc routing protocols may show different performance in different scenarios of mobile wireless networks. To explore what featured category of ad hoc protocols is mostly applicable for what featured category of mobile wireless networks, two simulation models, the "constant-speed-movement model" and the ''variable-speed-movement model", for mobile wireless networks are proposed in this paper. The applicability' analysis of ad hoc routing protocols based on the two simulation models for mobile wireless networks shows that TORA and DSDV show similar performance and both are only applicable for the mobile network scenario where the network is small, the nodes in the network move in a low speed and always stop moving for a long time, but TORA shows better performance in packet delivery rate than DSDV when the network becomes larger. In comparison, AODV and DSR show better multi-hop data transmission performance when the nodes move slowly no matter how large is the network, and they also show better multi-hop data transmission performance in the network scenario where the nodes moves fast in a small network. In comparison with DSR, AODV has larger packet delivery rate, and is more applicable for the mobile network scenario where the network is larger and the nodes in the network move faster.
