Implementation of ADS-B systems — Benefits and considerations

Increasingly, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is being used around the world as an alternative to Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR). Implementing ADS-B based surveillance provides many benefits to Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) and commercial aviation. This includes reduced separation and increased capacity; reduced acquisition and life cycle costs; reduced fuel costs and reduced carbon emissions. Additionally, ADS-B reduces the need for maintaining and/or upgrading aging radar infrastructure. This paper describes the NAV CANADA implementation of ADS-B surveillance Over Hudson Bay, the key considerations for implementing these systems and the benefits that were achieved.
