In this paper, we propose a new channel reservation mechanism called Matching Reservation Algorithm (MRA). The aim of this method are to handle the handover issue, reducing the new call dropping rate and increasing the successful handover rate simultaneously in low earth orbit satellite networks. Due to the high satellite velocity when placed in low orbits the satellite coverage areas change frequently and these systems face an important number of handover operations. The performance of MRA is examined by simulations and compared to the Guaranteed Handover algorithm. The results show the behaviour of the schemes and their performance in terms of new call and handover blocking probabilities.
