New room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) containing phosphoniaspiro[4.4]nonan (PS_(4,4)~+) could be obtained by selecting an amide anion with structural asymmetry such as fluorosulfonyl (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide (FTA~). PS_(44)~+ could not form RTILs with another amide anion such as FSA" ([(FSO_2)_2N]~-, and TFSA~- ([(CF_3SO_2)_2N]~-), which indicated that the structural asymmetry in an anion effectively decreasing the melting point of symmetric phosphonium such as PS_(4,4)~+.
