Presentation Abstract: The authors believe that affordable compliance is possible with proactive management of the schedules, policies, contractors, and Best Management Practices (BMPs) used on site. However, it also important to recognize that some efforts to control costs may result in greater risk of environmental impacts and/or non-compliance. To meet the challenge this workshop will combine presentation content with workshop sections to give students practical tools for use on their own projects. The authors' experiences in BMP contracting and performing compliance inspections, as well as surveys of compliance specialists have shown that as much as a third of most compliance budgets are spent on re-working poor quality installations and repairing BMPs damaged by vehicles and equipment. Eliminating these wasteful practices are part of the solution to achieving Affordable Compliance. Key strategies explored in the presentation/workshop include preventive maintenance, better installation quality, reducing damage to BMPs, and streamlining communication and effectively using other procedural BMPs.
