Primary and secondary carbonyls as a product ofmobile source emissions related to atmospheric carbonmonoxide and ozone in the Mexico City MetropolitanZone
Due to their toxics effects in the public health, carbonyl concentrations in theatmosphere of the Mexico City Metropolitan Zone (MCMZ) are very important toadequate control strategies. In the MCMZ, the mobile sources contribute with the majoremissions of carbonyls.Carbonyls were measured in 5 sampling sites at the MCMZ: Northwest (NW),Northeast (NE), Downtown (D), Southwest (SW) and Southeast (SE), during themonths of May and June of 2005. The samples were collected during the morning whenthe maximum concentration (peak) of carbon monoxide (CO) was present and in theafternoon, at the ozone (O3) maximum concentration peak, were recorded by the FederalDistrict Automatic Network for Air Quality Monitoring in MCMZ (SIMATGDF).The same air quality sampling methodology and two different analytical techniques forthe evaluation of carbonyls in the atmosphere were used. The first analytical technique, determined formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, propanal and 2butanone;and in thesecond analytical technique, determined 73 carbonyls, including aliphatic and aromaticcarbonyls, the average concentrations of the 73 carbonyls found are reported in thispaper. The 73 carbonyls reported, the highest concentrations were related to the peaks of COand O3, as well as with the concentrations of NO2, in the atmosphere of the MCMZ.
