The majority of practicing engineers working in the field of composite structures have studiedthe mechanics of composite materials. Due to limited schedules in university education, undergraduates are usually restricted to studying laminate constitutive relationships. Fewpracticing engineers are able to devote the time needed to understand structural governingequations and solution techniques including analytical and approximate solutions. However, there are a variety of analytical and approximate solutions that, although limited in scope, areextremely powerful design tools. In this paper, the governing equations are defined for thebending of a laminated plate and the axisymmetric loading of a laminated cylinder. Solutiontechniques for the plate are described for various boundary conditions and orthotropy. Detailedinformation for solving the laminated cylinder subject to axisymmetric axial loads, torque, internal and external pressures, and a uniform temperature change is included. It is anticipatedthat the provided detail and accompanying references will aid an engineer, who has completed anundergraduate course in composite material mechanics in conducting simple analysis oflaminated cylinders and plates.
