FREEZE-THAW DURABILITY OF PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE SUBJECTED TO AIRFIELD PAVEMENT DEICER

In this contribution, the influence of calciurn magnesium acetate (CMA), which is the maincomposition of the most frequently used airfield pavement dicer, on the freezing-thawingdurability of Portland cement concrete were investigated. Freezing-thawing durability ofPortland cement concrete was tested by accelerated freezing-thawing test. Three kinds ofsolutions, namely tap water, 3.5% NaCl solution, and CMA solution were employed to be thefreezing-thawing mediums. Results show that freezing-thawing durability of concrete exposedto CMA solutions is related to the solution concentrations. CMA solution with a concentrationof 3.5% is beneficial to durability of Portland cement concrete. Freeze-thaw failure ofconcrete exposed to 3.5% CMA solution is similar to that of concrete exposed to tap water;both are consequences of propagation of inner cracks. While freeze-thaw failure of concreteexposed to NaCl solution is different and is characterized by surface deterioration. When thesamples exposed to 12.5% and 25% CMA solution are investigated, no tendency to failureeven when the samples had subjected up to 600 cycles were observed. As long as durability ofconcrete exposed to airfield pavement dicer is concerned, attention should be mainly paid oncorrosion occurred at normal temperature.
