The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial distribution of lineaments extracted from satellite images in order to contribute to the understanding of the faults. Study area partly covers the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) in Turkey. Landsat ETM image is used for the analysis which is processed using four different manual extraction techniques (filtering, PCA, band rationing and color composites). Using these techniques, first of all, a lineament map of the area is prepared. During the second stage of the study, four analyses are applied for the evaluation of the lineaments. These are: 1) density analysis, 2) intersection density analysis, 3) length analysis, and 4) orientation analysis.Evaluation of the length, density and orientation of the lineaments indicated that: a) there are fault zones in the area other than the NAFZ, b) Several fault segments are identified in the region which are absent in the fault map due the difficulty in mapping during the field studies; c) the dominant lineament trend is NE-SW (parallel to the NAFZ), however, a second trend is obvious in NW-SE direction.
