The various methods for describing the limits of each parcel in cadastral system must include an element that refers uniquely to the parcel as a whole. The existing parcel referencing system adopted in Sri Lanka where the whole country is divided into 9 provinces, subdivided all over again into 25 districts with over 8.5 million parcels of land (more than 350,000 parcels per district) that have to be brought into the cadastre seems quite complicated. It has been time consuming and financially costly for cross-referencing within the registers and other filing systems, since the land is functional to the subdivisions and amalgamations with the rapid growth of population in the country.Geocoding is an alternative solution as a parcel identifier which gives the inimitable identity by a sequential combination of X, Y geographical coordinates of a convenient point with in the parcel in World Geodetic System (WGS 84) over georeferenced and georectified high resolution satellite background imagery through a computer environment where all the land related attributes can be linked to retrieve them for a verity of purposes from registration of title through to all forms of land administration.
