1 INTRODUCTIONThe Silurian carbonate successions of the Timan-northern Ural region(=Pechora Plate)were deposited on the passive north-eastern margin (in modern co-ordinates) of the East European continent(Text-fig.1).Sedimentation took place on an extensive carbonate platform located on a gradually subsiding continental margin.An epicontinental sea was shallow,with a fiat bottom sloping very gently eastward,towards the Paleo-Uralian Ocean.Carbonate platforms represent marine ecosystems that are born,developed and,for various reasons,eventually die(Antoshkina,2003).
