In this paper we present the configuration and improvement of a palm size hemispherical display device. This device provides a partially enlarged GUI display as an operating surface with a built-in pointing device, supporting novice PC users and aged people. They will be able to use it as a pointing device and as a second display. The hemispherical shape was chosen because the peaceful feeling and shape improves visibility of a section of a PC screen. The hemispherical display is implemented through a hemispherical rear projection screen combining two optical systems and a small liquid crystal display without using a projector. We used computer simulations for design of the optical systems and visibility analysis. From analyzing the luminous flux density distribution characteristics and the angle expansion distribution of the beam in the hemispherical dome surface, we found that the hemispherical display has some optical defects. The display exhibits some edge darkening and image distortion. However, these problems are solved by first processing the extracted image. The color steps and image resolution are somewhat reduced using this method, however they are sufficient for our purpose.
