Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), plant II potline consists of 288 GP 320 reduction cells designed for operation at 320 kA. As per the GAMI design, a power outage was required every time a pot was put on power. As the start up of pots progressed, it was realised that the operating pots, as well as the power plant, were being affected by the frequent power outages.BALCO developed a fuse with which it was possible to power on pots at 240 kA without reducing the amperage to 0 kA. This innovation was crucial to reduce the production losses during the power outages and disturbances to the operating pots and for stable power plant operation.BALCO has successfully implemented this technology in the start up of 221 pots and adapted this as a standard procedure to put pots on power. The results were clearly visible in the increase in production, stability of operating pots and the elimination of frequent power outages. The patenting of the " BALCO FUSE TECHNOLOGY " is in progress.
