The focus on today's research and development activities in the medium voltage areais mainly concentrated on four major items:? Reduction of environmental impact? Increase of operator's safety? Optimisation of technical performance? New materials for insulationThe technical performance can be classified in five main categories:? Isolate? Interrupt? Measure? Transform? ProtectThis presentation is intended to describe the present and future trends in interruptiontechnology. From the early 1970 `s onwards oil circuit breakers were replaces byvacuum interrupters. Initially these were high cost alternatives to oil and had ratingslimited to 12/24 Kv and 25/31, 5 Ka, but further development has reduced the costdramatically, and ratings up to 100 Ka and 36 Kv in a single break interrupter havebeen widely available from the 1980's onward. This presentation will describe theavailable development tools and will give an outlook for the future.
