VERANDAH IN FRIEDRICH SILABAN’S RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS

Silaban’s verandah design characteristics are the roof, wide overhangs, materials, connection with interior-exterior, and sitting elements. Some differences in two houses (the number and size of verandah and roof materials) show the changement of verandah in his design. As conclusion, the variation imply his design process to realize his notion of verandah that rooted from Indonesian vernacular house. The result of this paper will be a preliminary research for a completed analysis of verandah in his other projects to clarify transition, evolution and creation of verandah in Silaban’s residential projects designs. Futhermore, the research will clarify the design method used by Silaban in developing verandah as a modern tropical space.
