A method which allows an objective description of remaining pollution of paint coatings, soiled in a defined way, after cleaning tests was developed for the quality assurance of cleaning agents producers. Colorimetric and morphological features can be quantified with the method of digital colour image analysis. The first step to apply this technique requires a systematic investigation of the colour transformation properties with respect to the selected input/output devices used for digital imaging (flatbed scanner, CRT display). To develop a colour management system, mathematical models of the colour transformation processes were optimised and embedded in a commercial colour image analysis software. This system is used successfully for the reliable determination of the effect of cleaning agents and has been applied in practice.
