Clinical Evaluation of the Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western Medicine on Treatment of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

Objective To evaluate the effective treatment of combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with western medicine on Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Methods 102 cases of SARS patients admitted to our hospital from March 11 to April 30, 2003 were analyzed. Results 65 cases of SARS patients were treated with integrated western medicine with TCM including 52 mild cases with 51 cases cured (98.1%) .No patient died. And 13 severe cases, in which 9 were cured (69.2% ) and 2 died (15.4% ) . 37 cases were treated with western medicine, in which 18 were common cases and 16 were cured (88.9%) ; 19 were severe cases and 10 were cured (52.6%) ,9 cases were died (47.4%) .Compared with the group treated with the combination of TCM and western medicine, P = 0.061, the difference is close to the value for statistical significance. Considering small samples, more cases are needed in the future. The immune function examination: In common cases, after combined treatment with TCM and western medicine, CD4~+ T lymphocytes were from 360 +- 247/mm~3 increased to 563 +- 479/ mm~3 (P < 0.05) . In the group treated with western medicine only, CD4~+ T lymphocytes were from 331+-193/mm~3 increased to 772 +- 354/mm~3 (P < 0.05). For severe cases, after combined treatment with TCM and western medicine, CD4~+ T lymphocytes were 352 +- 2797mm~3 increased to 525 +- 490/mm~3 ( P > 0.05) . In the group of severe cases treated with western medicine only, CD4~+ T lymphocytes were 229 +-69/mm~3 decreased to 205 +- 108/mm~3(P > 0.05) .While after combined treatment with TCM and western medicine, CD4~+ T lymphocytes were significantly higher than the group treated with western medicine only (P < 0.05). Conclusion Compared with the group treated with western medicine only, combined treatment with TCM and western medicine can significantly improve the prognosis, reduce the fatality rate as well as improve the immune function for SARS patients.
