Small-size, low-power, and low-cost sensors that detect magnetic fields lower than the Earth's field are in demand in most major industries. Their sensitivity allows them to determine precision orientation, measure physiological functions and detect geophysical anomalies, metal defects, magnetic inks, and minute particles associated with immunoassay. While significant advances have been made, more are on the way thanks to the development and application of SDT (spin dependent tunneling). This session discusses SDT and the solid-state devices this technology enables. It explores how they can help solve problems involving low magnetic signatures. Particular emphasis is placed on use of this technology for nondestructive test, evaluation, and inspection and for anomaly detection.
