In conclusion, electronic devices provide challenges to their designers in terms of requiring air or gas flow between the environment and the device interior for gas property sensing, heat transfer, or pressure equalization. However, these devices are adversely affected by solid or liquid contaminants in the gas stream. Hydrophobic microporous membranes can be used an effective barrier to contaminants, yet they allow the flow of gas through them with minimal resistance. The various applications that exist all have somewhat different requirements in terms of airflow, resistance to wetting, and size of particles that must be excluded. By comparing the application requirements to the properties of the various membranes that are available, the most appropriate selection can be mabe. This, in turn, ensures optimal performance of the protected device.
