Alginate is a copolymer consisting of β-D-mannuronic acid and α-L-guluronic acid residues, obtained from various species of kelp. The polymer is known to form a gel by hydrophobic interactions at low pH and by crosslinking with divalent cations such as calcium. Different alginate qualities exhibit different gel properties. The aim of this study was to achieve a predetermined in vitro sustained release from tablets of a water-soluble drug; aspirin, over a period of time, and to control the release time.
