The behavior of slag penetration into MgO refractory was investigated by in-situ X-ray observation, microstructural analysis of the specimens after penetration. Penetration height, h_o, increases linearly with the square root of the penetration time, t, in the initial stage of the penetration. The slope of h_o vs t~(1/2) linear relation is depend on the slag composition, temperature, and the structure of refractory, etc. Penetration height, h_o was fairly in good agreement with that calculated one, h_c, from a capillary model in which a labyrinth factor ξ was introduced.
