A new gravimetric technique has been developed for studying dynamic refractory-slag interactions. Overcoming one of the limitations of conventional testing techniques, which rely on post mortem analysis, the in-situ gravimetric data measured provide insight into the interactive processes; from initial slag contact, wetting and penetration, interfacial reactions (if any), refractory dissolution, to severe wear and failure. The technique has been successfully applied to refractory-slag systems pertinent to ferrous and non-ferrous applications. Examples showing a variety of refractory-slag interactions and the characteristics of wetting and penetration of magnesia based refractories by iron oxide containing slags are discussed.
