An extended study of corrosion of aggregates, model refractories and post-mortem examination of in-service refractories reveals several important trends. Slag corrosion of oxide-based refractories can be reasonably well understood using simple experimental tests, model systems and phase equilibria (diagrams and calculations). However, slag attack of C-bonded refractories is much more complex. While thermodynamic calculations and phase equilibria suggest trends in C-based systems the current experimental testing techniques are limited.
