Leukemia and lymphoma in clean-up workers of the Chernobyl catastrophe consequences: Developing of our understanding

The main goal of the presented study is to estimate risks of Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Chernobyl clean-up workers and to find out risks assessment difference in those who participated emergency work in 1986, 1987 and later as it was determined for leukemia (B. Ledoshchuk et al. 1999). Lymphoma risks excess is not determined in liquidators of 1986 versus liquidators of other years of clean-up work through the full period of observation (1987-1996). Although the leukemia risk in liquidators of 1986 exceeds that in liquidators of 1987 (SIR 3,32; 95 % CI 1,08; 10,20) in 1987-1991. The peak is observed in 1989-1990 (SIR 4,86; 95 % CI 1,15; 20,52). The results achieved prove that the hemopoetic system of clean-up work participants is affected by irradiation following the catastrophe resulting in the increased leukemia risk. There is no evidence of the lymphoma risks rice in Chernobyl accident clean-up workers.
