Construction of the BP Endicott facility offshore Prudhoe Bay Alaska was completed and oil production began in October 1987. The facility consists of two gravel islands, the Main production Island (MPI) and the Satellite Drilling Island (SDI), linked to one another and the mainland by two gravel roads. The islands are located in water between 2.1 m (7 ft.) and 3.7 m (12 ft.) in depth and have a working surface elevation of 3.7m (12 ft.) with respect to mean sea level. The Endicott facility is unique in the world in that it is the first offshore production system founded on a gravel island at any arctic location.
