The buccal cavity is a drug delivery route of interest as it possesses a rich blood circulation draining directly into the jugular vein; provides easy delivery even to unconscious patients and those incapable of swallowing; presents the possibility of easy interruption of release. However the provision of sustained or contorlled release of drug from a buccal delivery system mandates a prolonged residence time in the buccal cavity~1,2.
