The terne sheet(Pb-Sn) is usually used as a material for the fuel tanks of motor vehicles. However, it has been pointed out that lead can seriously cause environment disruption and damage human health. Therefore, it has been demanded for the steel manufacturers to develop a Pb-free coated steel as an alternative steel for automotive fuel tank applications. The results of laboratory and industrial application studies for corrosion resistance, fuel compatibility, formability and weldability show that the phenoxy resin coating on the electroplated Zn-Ni steel sheet provides the excellent performance of fuel tank. The newly developed resin coated steel sheet is able to replace the terne sheet as the fuel tank material.
