Magnesium, in a molten state, requires some form of protection to inhibit oxidation and prevent burning. Since the 1970s, fluxless melt protection based upon sulfur hexafluoride as the effective reagent in a cover atmosphere has been a boon to those in the industry who process molten magnesium and/or its alloys. This technology has been a major contributor to the growth of the magnesium casting alloy market during the last two decades.
