A Jurassic Rb-Sr age of 170 Ma is reported for sphalerites from the large sandstone-hosted strataound Maubach and Mechernich Pb-Zn deposits in the northern Eifel. Germany. Rb-Sr data are interpreted in terms of teh conventional isochron model and a two-component Sr-mixing approach, giving identical ages within errors. Linear arrays of sphalerite fluid inclusions in a Rb-Sr isochron diagram indicate the presence of secondary ocmponents. A well-correlated regression line of granulometric fractions from mineralized sandstones and adsorbed sheet silicates removed from sphalerites by HF leaching shows no relation to the sphalerite isochron but instead points to detrital components from Devonian provenance areas.
