Surface of poly(tetrafluoroethylene) [PTFE] film was modified chemcially by an ArF excimer laser-induced reaction in a hydrazine gas atmosphere. The polymer surface defluorinated with the photolyzed hydrazine showed hydrophilicity high enough to the metallized by chemical plating. The mechanism for the modification was ivnestigated by XPS, FTIR, and SIMS analyses. A patterned nickel plating having a sufficient adhesion strength was carried out by the area-selective laser-treatment. This processign provides a fully-additive method for fabricatio nof printed wiring boards with PTFE substrates.
