Substitution testing has been used since the beginning of assembly line production. This method of test involves replacing a part of a known good assembly and running the system through various tests to prove whether or not the whole system will perform as expected with the replacement part installed. If the system passes the basic functional test, then the substituted part is suitable for this environment. In the electronic test industry this operation is alos referred to as "Hot Mockup" testing.
