Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is a quaternary ammonium salt used as topical anti-infective to treat injured skin and oral infections; it is effective against many Gram+and some Gram- microorganisms and it is well tolerated by mucosa and the injured skin. When a topical dosage form is administered the persistence of drug action as long as possible at the site of administration is envisaged, on this purpose bioadhesive polymers combine two desirable actions: they prolong residence time at the site of drug administration and increase contact to the skin or mucosa, so favoring drug absorption.
