Immunospecific albumin microspheres containing cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil for intraperitoneal chemotherapy

Systemic intraperitoneal administration of chemotherapeutic agents is often limited by the resulting toxic side effects, and therefore, dose escalation is confined within a relatively narrow range. However, within the peritoneal cavity high concentrations of cytotoxic agents may be achieved and maintained for long periods of time, which could have an effect on disease limited primarily to that area. The results of several studies have demonstrated that cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy is more effective than single agents in the treatment of ovarian cancer. It has also been shown that cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil, in combination, have synergistic cytotoxicity against both murine and human neoplasms.
