When municipal solid waste (MSW) is incinerated, harmful gases such as dioxin, NO{sub}x etc. are generated in incinerators. In order to decrease such air pollutant, it is necessary to clarify the mechanism of waste combustion which consists ofvery complex phenomena. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to predict the characteristics of combustion in waste layer of stoker-type incinerator which is used widely, and to propose a model of combustion in waste layer. In this model, we considerinteractions between solid and gas, assuming that waste layer is porous media. Additionally, we also consider chemical reactions on the basis of coal combustion. Especially, the model is made by considering the emissions of CO and NO{sub}x, because COconcentration is related with the emission of dioxin proportionally, and NO{sub}x emission is a source of air pollution. In this paper, the model of combustion in waste layer of stoker-type incinerator is described in detail, and the calculation resultsare reported.
